Visiting a vast, complex and overwhelming landscape. How to find a format to reflect the central issues of first findings and questions? Even to formulate an approach to understand what these central issues might be. How to get an overview? Conventional cartography fails as a possible means. Topographical maps at a meaningful scale in Turkey are under military hold. I found that I’m most directly tied to the photographs that I took during our two visits. They carry in them the information that forms the larger part of my knowledge of the place, and I may draw from this for further reflection. After narrowing down the choice of these photographs, I tried to very briefly explain the images and the central concerns that stand behind them. Fifteen such issues form a descriptive contribution to the publication of the International Carlo Scarpa Prize for Gardens 2020-2021.
